Data Science: How to Thoughtfully Integrate Science, Math and Computer Science
Monday June 9, 2025 9:45am - 10:45am CDT
Many states are embracing “data science” as a new high school course that emphasizes data visualization and data storytelling. In this session we describe hands-on data science activities with spreadsheets that we developed as part of the STEMcoding project (http://youtube.com/STEMcoding). These activities strongly align with various math, science and computer science standards. They can be used in a year long data science or statistics course, or they can enhance science, math or computer science courses.

CS and/or Cybersecurity Content Knowledge Level Required: Novice.

HPC-ED: Building a Community CyberTraining Catalog
Monday June 9, 2025 2:00pm - 3:00pm CDT
A wealth of CyberTraining material exists, but locating appropriate resources can be challenging. HPC-ED’s primary goal is to improve discovery and sharing of CyberTraining resources through a federated catalog, an effective and flexible interface, and active community participation. HPC-ED enables training material owners to publish metadata describing their resources, allows organizations to enrich their local portals with shared materials, and provides individuals with the ability to share and discover training resources.

We'd like to take this opportunity to introduce HPC-ED to the WeTeach_CS community, we hope this infrastructure will prove useful.

Unplugging Recursion
Tuesday June 10, 2025 10:00am - 11:00am CDT
During the session, presenters will decompose recursion into manageable parts to develop a deeper working knowledge of recursion. Participants will walk away with an unplugged activity that can be used in the classroom to help students learn about recursion using physical movement. The unplugged activity from this session can be used by teachers to help students implement recursion into their block or text-based programs.

CS and/or Cybersecurity Content Knowledge Level Required: Novice, Intermediate, Expert.

Ethical Generative AI with App Inventor
Tuesday June 10, 2025 11:15am - 12:15pm CDT
This session introduces a human-centered approach to teaching generative artificial intelligence (GAI) through ethics-first curricula, aligned with UNESCO’s AI Competency Frameworks for School Students & Teachers. Designed to foster critical thinking and inclusive engagement, this project-based curriculum emphasizes responsible, inclusive access to and development of GAI.

Participants gain hands-on experience with App Inventor — a free, open-source mobile app creation platform developed at MIT that now features GAI components — including sample curricular units focused on fostering a 'human-centered mindset.'.

The App Inventor Foundation's mission is to empower people across the globe to create apps that improve their lives and uplift their communities.
