If You’re Happy and You Code It: Experiencing Joy with Music and Computational Thinking
Monday June 9, 2025 9:45am - 10:45am CDT
The four pillars of computational thinking—decomposition, pattern recognition, abstraction, and algorithmic thinking—serve as essential skills for problem-solving in the digital age. Yet, introducing these abstract concepts to learners can be challenging. This presentation explores how simple songs commonly taught in elementary school can serve as accessible, engaging tools for teaching computational thinking. Attendees will gain practical strategies for leveraging these familiar tunes to foster computational thinking in elementary education and beyond. By connecting music to computational frameworks, educators can create a playful yet purposeful bridge to foundational 21st-century skills. This presentation is ideal for educators, curriculum designers, and advocates for interdisciplinary approaches in STEM education. Whether you're a seasoned coder or just starting your journey, this session offers a playful and collaborative unplugged environment to experience the joy of integrating music and computational thinking in your classroom. Come prepared to clap, code, and create!

Teaching CS and Math Concepts through Creative Calculations of Pi
Monday June 9, 2025 12:45pm - 1:45pm CDT
Both introductory and advanced CS classes can learn a great deal from grappling with the simple challenge of calculating the circumference of a circle from its diameter. In this session we describe three different ways to calculate pi and how they employ different CS and math concepts. At an introductory level, Pi can be calculated in a very visual way using a “Monte Carlo” method. At an advanced level, we demonstrate how Pi can be calculated using multiple CPU cores on a single chromebook or any other web-capable device. These free activities were developed by the STEMcoding project (http://youtube.com/STEMcoding).

Plenary Session - Forming Stars Inside Supercomputers
Tuesday June 10, 2025 8:30am - 9:30am CDT
Stars are the atoms of the Universe: they power the evolution of galaxies like our Milky Way, shape the formation of planetary systems, and produce the elements necessary for life. As stars form they influence their birth environment through heating, winds, and supernova explosions. Since we can’t watch stars form in ‘real time’, the world’s largest supercomputers provide a crucial laboratory to study the complex process that creates stars like our Sun. In this talk, I will discuss how we use computers to model forming stars and aim to answer open questions: What sets the mass of stars? Why do some solar systems have more than one star? Why is star formation so inefficient in our galaxy, which forms only a few stars per year?

Teaching and Learning About AI with the Micro:bit
Tuesday June 10, 2025 10:00am - 11:00am CDT
Join me to add AI to a micro:bit learning experience. We will use micro:bit Create AI to train a Machine Learning (ML) model and the run it on a micro:bit V2. You will collect movement data from the micro:bit accelerometer, then train a ML model to recognize patterns in the  data, and then code the micro:bit to run the ML model so your creation can be taken anywhere. Micro:bit CreateAI allows you to explore the vital role data plays in AI systems, and develop AI literacy. It also helps to consolidate computer science learning and skills of data literacy used in mathematics and science.

You will need a computer (laptop or Chromebook) with Chrome or Edge browser that has a regular USB port (not type C--if you have type C, bring an adaptor to connect to regular USB cable ).

Building students’ sense of belonging is critical to recruiting, engaging, and retaining them in computer science (CS). When students feel they belong, they are ready to engage on a deeper level. However, girls often feel they do not belong in CS classes. Our research lab has been studying when and why these gender gaps emerge in CS to help teachers address them. Teachers will be presented with research findings in a simple, actionable, and fun way to discuss in a community of practice. Teachers will leave with an action plan to promote their students' belonging.
