Integrating Computer Science and Amateur Radio into your TEKS and After School Club
Monday June 9, 2025 9:45am - 10:45am CDT
Our session shares how our WeTeach_CS Mini-Grant has allowed us to integrate coding skills in an innovative way with amateur radio.  This opportunity involves students from computer science and engineering classes as well as law and health science.   Students initially capture satellite data and upload it to a Raspberry Pi for analysis (coding).  Ultimately students build an antenna rotator and code it using an Arduino to automate the position of a small antenna tracking a weather satellite.  This project brings together technical knowledge and hands-on experience, while learning skills for job environments and community service opportunities.

Introducing Physical Computing Inputs and Outputs to Young Learners
Monday June 9, 2025 9:45am - 10:45am CDT
Young learners (ages 4+) can now learn computer science using a simple physical computing device that introduces the concept of inputs and outputs in the real world. Learners can bring their coding projects to life by interacting with the physical world. The Cog device connects to tablets or computers over Bluetooth, and includes programmable multicolor lights, a speaker, motion sensor, light sensor, IR sensors, and a push-button. The Cog can be programmed using junior blocks with pictures or traditional blocks with words. Come get hands-on and learn how to bring your creativity to life using this simple, fun device.

Deep in the Heart: A Micro:bit Musical Road Trip
Monday June 9, 2025 2:00pm - 3:00pm CDT
HOWDY, coders! Saddle up for a musical journey through the heart of Texas, where the Micro:bit takes center stage. In this hands-on workshop, we'll transform the beloved anthem "Deep in the Heart of Texas" into a captivating symphony of light, sound, and motion.  Together, we'll explore the Micro:bit's versatile features – from its dazzling LED display and built-in speaker to its motion-sensing capabilities and integrated microphone – and learn how to orchestrate them using Microsoft MakeCode. No matter your coding experience, you'll discover how to program the Micro:bit to create rhythmic light shows, generate melodies, and even respond to your movements, all synchronized to the iconic Texan tune.  Join us for a collaborative coding experience that blends music, technology, and computational thinking in a uniquely Texan way!
